A passport is your identity document for traveling abroad. You will need to obtain a new passport if your current passport expires, runs out of pages, is lost or damaged, or if there are changes in your personal information.
Passport renewal is a fundamental need for all Iranian citizens. For example, a person may intend to travel to Iran for work or personal reasons. Also, to carry out certain legal or business procedures, a valid passport is the first step.
The process of renewing a passport varies due to differences in conditions and requirements in each country. In Canada, Iranians must apply for a new passport through the Canada Headquarters (via Dublin) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Office for the Protection of Interests of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Washington, D.C.
For more information and to review all the steps and documents needed for the complete process of applying for a new Iranian passport in Canada, please read the full guide.
Important Note: This process may vary depending on various factors such as the number of applicants and public holidays. Issuance of a passport at the Canada Headquarters (via Dublin) takes 4 to 6 weeks from the time of submission of documents to receipt of the passport. Therefore, considering this time period and the status of your current passport (for example, if it is about to reach the remaining 6 months of validity), plan your trip in a timely manner.
Reasons for renewing, replacing, or applying for a passport:
Reasons for needing a new passport include:
- Expiration of validity: Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity for traveling to different countries. If your passport is about to expire, you will need to renew it in time.
- Pages filled: If the pages of your passport are filled (due to multiple trips and visas).
- Lost or damaged: If your passport is lost or damaged, you will need to obtain a new one.
- Change of first and last name: If you change your first and last name, you must apply for a new passport.
- Change of date of birth in the birth certificate: If you change and correct your date of birth in the birth certificate, these changes must also be reflected in your passport.
- Change of place of residence: When you reside in another country (such as Canada) for a long time but do not yet have citizenship in that country, your current country of residence is listed in the “Place of Passport Issuance” section of your passport.
Important points about the passport applicant:
Married women can apply for a passport if they have their husband’s permission.
A father, paternal grandfather, or legal guardian can apply for a passport for a child or grandchild under the age of 18. In this case, it is necessary to provide a birth certificate and proof of guardianship.
